Description
The Photoelastic Stress Demonstration Unit, “PSD”, consists of a frame on which the test specimens are placed. The specimens are made of a special transparent material that has a double optical refraction effect under the action of a mechanical load.
The individual specimens are loaded by applying external forces and illuminated with a polarized light (required element). The load is applied by means of a spindle, allowing the application of tensile or compressive force, which is measured by means of a dynamometer.
Polarizing filters represent the stress distribution in colors. By using white or monochromatic light and a different configuration of linear and circular polarizer/analyzer we can obtain the direction of principal stresses and the difference of principal stresses. A filter is included to generate monochromatic light.
