Description

The Pumping Storage Power Plant Application, with SCADA, “AEL-GAD-01S”, has been developed by Edibon to study the pumped storage power stations and their applications.

Pumping Storage Power Plants Applications are a type of hydroelectric energy storage used by electric power systems for load balancing. The method stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation. Low-cost off-peak electric power is used to run the pumps. During periods of high electrical demand, the stored water is released through turbines to produce electric power. Although the losses of the pumping process makes the plant a net consumer of energy overall, the system increases revenue by selling more electricity during periods of peak demand, when electricity prices are highest.

The AEL-GAD-01S includes all the necessary modules to simulate and study the operation of a hydroelectric pumping power plants and it different elements. This application includes a synchronous generator, a servo machine and an electric motor with dynamic brake.

The generator in combination with the servo machine allows us to simulate and control the generation through the multifunction relay/ controller as if it was a real representation of the generation stage of a hydroelectric power plant. Furthermore, the squirrel cage induction motor and the dynamic brake system, in addition to the frequency control we apply over it, allows us to represent the pumping stage of a pumped storage power plant. As a whole, this application permits simulating in a laboratory scale a real pumped storage plant.

The energy produced by the synchronous generator is consumed by a three-phase induction motor with a dynamic brake which in conjunction with the SCADA let us represent simulated energy demand curves as a real portrayal of the energy consumption of a population nucleus or a whole electric system.

Control modules are included in order to accomplish a safe synchronization, protection and accuracy control.

This application includes an SCADA Control Software to simulate how the electrical energy is produced and stored. This software permits understand how the potential energy of water is converted into electrical power which is then fed back into the grid.

In addition, the SCADA control software includes programming functions for optimum management of the pumping station. This software allows the representation of a real demand curve (simulated) for subsequent energy planning from it, thus reproducing the energy management of a real network.

The “GAD-01S-UB” is the base unit of the “AEL-GAD-01S” application.
